Virtual Colonoscopy is a fundamentally new technology for examining the large intestine, enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment of colorectal cancer. It has held a prominent place in leading medical clinics since the early 2000s.
This advancement was made possible by the emergence of a new generation of scanners based on multidetector technology.
The high resolution and fast scanning speed using high-definition techniques allow for the production of high-quality images. Powerful post-processing capabilities provide a virtual image of the entire colon and the ability to perform a so-called "fly-through" of the lumen.
Our workstation is equipped with software for automatic evaluation and detection of changes in the intestinal wall. By performing sequential scans of the patient in both the supine and prone positions, and through the mandatory use of spiral contrast-enhanced scanning, invaluable information is obtained regarding the disease process and the degree of wall involvement. In addition, changes in nearby or distant organs can also be detected (e.g., changes in the liver and retroperitoneal lymph chains).
More than 80% of colon cancer cases arise from pre-existing colonic polyposis.
Early detection of polyps larger than 10 mm and their removal through fiber-optic colonoscopy is a primary goal in cancer prevention.
The indisputable advantages of the method are:
The only drawback of the method is the need for thorough bowel cleansing. Therefore, adherence to a specific two-day dietary regimen that limits certain foods is mandatory. Given the significant benefits of this examination, this inconvenience can be considered entirely negligible.
